NEW Live Video Conference course: ICOM M802 Radio -Starting from Scratch, Calgary or Remote Access

ICOM IC-M802 Radio: "Starting from Scratch" - join US radio expert, experienced cruiser and author Terry Sparks as he covers the installation, setup and operation of the ICOM M802 HF SSB radio for long distance radio communication at sea. Terry will be presenting via video-conferencing technology, hosted by SMART Technologies. Registered participants also have the option to attend remotely. Lunch will be provided for those attending the classroom session.

Course Information:

Maintaining communications while at sea is one of the critical components of preparing for offshore voyaging. While new technologies are making communication easier, Single Side Band (SSB) HF radio is still the primary method of communication for most offshore sailors.

Format:
Terry Sparks will be presenting via video conferencing technology on large, interactive screens in the SMART classroom in Calgary. This service is courtesy of SMART Technologies.

 

If you are unable to attend in Calgary, there is an option to "attend electronically" via live video link to your computer, tablet or smartphone. This option is open to all BCA members and non-members across the country and the seas!

The cost remains the same and includes the textbook for the first registrant.  Registration is completed on-line in the normal manner through the BCA website. 

  • You MUST include a viable email address at the time of registration in order to receive the digital invitation to join the video conference at the commencement of the course.

Instructor:

 

Terry Sparks started his naval career as an electronics technician, repairing communications and radar equipment aboard diesel and missile submarines. After leaving active duty, Terry returned to school and attained a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He was promoted to Ensign and ultimately retired as Commander. His FCC license history includes 1st Class Radio Telephone with Radar endorsement (changed to a General Class Radio Telephone by the FCC); Radio Operator Permit; Ships License; Amateur Extra Ham License; General Mobile Radio Service License; and Global Maritime Distress and Safety System Maintainer License.

 

Lunch:
Lunch will be provided for those attending the classroom session at the SMART Technologies Building and is included in the course fee.

  • First Registered Member: $80, includes 1-copy of ICOM IC-M802 Starting from Scratch
  • Second Registrant (significant other or crew): $40, sharing a text book with the first member

Non-members:

  • First Registered Non-Member: $100, includes 1-copy  ICOM IC-M802 Starting from Scratch
  • Second Registrant (significant other or crew): $50, sharing a text book with first non-member

Registration required by April 25 to secure text books before the course date. 

Cancellation Fee:

There is a $15 processing fee in the event of a cancellation.
