Bears, Bergy Bits & Bubble Netting

Norm & Beth Cooper

About the Adventure Talk

Join BCA members Norm & Beth Cooper in their toques and down vests as they explore the frosty wilds of SE Alaska in their latest cruising adventure aboard Sarah Jean II! Heart stopping stories and breathtaking scenes, captured in hundreds of dazzling photos, will keep you entertained!

See bears scoop salmon from raging rivers, thread your way through menacing bergy bits en route to the towering glaciers of Tracy Arm and see pods of humpback whales bubble net feeding, a behaviour unique to SE Alaska. And for those who like to fish, join the hunt for giant halibut and the always elusive Alaskan king salmon!

For those planning to cruise SE Alaska, there will be some useful information presented on routes, marinas, anchorages and even a few fishing tips, including top secret halibut holes! Be sure to bring your IPad or pen and paper to note the coordinates! Beth and Norm will also share their favourite halibut recipes, just so you are prepared when you catch the big one!

About The Speakers

Beth and Norm live in Ocean Park just south of Vancouver. They headed offshore in September 2010 aboard Sarah Jean II, their Saga 43. This adventure took them to Mexico and across the South Pacific to New Zealand. The following season was spent exploring Fiji, Vanuatu and New Caledonia. In April 2013 they set sail home from New Zealand via Rarotonga, Penhryn Atoll in the Northern Cooks and Hawaii. They were away a total three years and travelled 25,000 nautical miles.

Upon their return Beth and Norm became active volunteers with the Vancouver Chapter of BCA. In 2015 they started Ocean Forest Voyaging, a local sailing school focussed on preparing couples for offshore voyaging. Then in 2017, when Beth retired as an Occupational Therapist, it was time for another cruising adventure of their own! The sailing school was put on ice, Sarah Jean II was filled with provisions and off they went to explore Alaska!
