When Julie Salisbury set off from the UK in 1998 to sail around the world she did so blindly, burning all her bridges. Seven years later she landed in Canada and transformed her journal notes into a book to pass on the knowledge she learned along the way. This seminar is all about passing on our knowledge so women can be confident, independent and empowered on the water.

3:45 Jennifer Handley Keynote PresentationIn Pursuit of the Dream

Don Degnan, yacht broker and freeland writer, once said that "the lovely thing about cruising is that planning usually turns out to be of little use." Despite his experience, many wise women would argue otherwise. The realization of the cruising dream cannot happen without planning, or without innumerable hours encouraging oneself to develop an interest in and undersand the many things that were previously unknown. Hence, this day, spent with like-minded, courageous and curious women, is one to celebrate.

What is WOW!

WOW! is a one day boating seminar which will feature workshops and speakers on various topics of interest to women boaters (including sailors, power boaters, newbies, those with salt in their veins, day trippers and long voyagers).

You do not have to login to BCA's site to register. If you are a member, it is preferable to login, as the registration form will auto-populate your personal information.

Want to Get Social?

Follow us on Twitter or Like our page on Facebook. We have also created a Facebook group for registrants to ask questions and coordinate travel to WOW! All registrants will receive an invitation to join this group.

Who will Attend?

Women boaters who want to increase their knowledge and skills, and confidence on the water, who would like to network with other women boaters and be inspired, are urged to attend.

Is this seminar limited to those interested in off-shore cruising?

WOW! is for any woman interested in boating, whether it is off-shore or out for a day trip.

Is this for power-boaters or sailors?

WOW! is for both. The workshops include topic choices that will be of interest to both: anchoring/docking; electronic basics; understanding weather; medical emergencies; knots, ropes, lines; safety on the water; general boat maintenance; communications onboard; and provisioning beyond the weekend.

Is this only for novices?

WOW! will have some topics that are at an introductory level and some at an intermediate level.

How many attendees do you expect?

We are planning for between 100-150 attendees.

What else makes this seminar interesting?

Attendees will have access to a state-of-the-art marine skills simulation lab in which to practice docking (note: space is limited for this workshop).

Why have a seminar just for women?

Some attending the seminar might not care if it is a women-only event, but for others, it will matter a great deal. It can be challenging to break out of stereotypes. We are all influenced by the context in which we live. We aim to provide a safe learning place where women can challenge their preconceptions and feel empowered.

What is your Cancellation Policy?

If you discover you cannot attend the seminar, you are free to give your registration to another person. Your replacement simply needs to advise the Registration Desk when she registers on the morning of the seminar. If you are unable to find a replacement: Before February 8, you may apply for a refund, less $25 administration fee. Between February 9 -28, your refund will be subject to a $75 administration fee. After February 28, we are sorry that refunds are not available. (Administration fees represent WOW’s financial commitments to suppliers)

Where is the seminar happening?

The seminar is being held in the Liz Ashton Campus Centre building at the Interurban Campus of Camosun College in Victoria, BC. (building #14 on Camosun's website). Please note that Camosun College has two campuses, so be sure to click on the "Interurban" tab to download the correct map.
